Youths and Agriculture

Farwestern university, Tikapur kailali

Agriculture is the backbone of Nepali economy.  On the same way, youth is the backbone of agriculture. Agriculture is incomplete without youths. Only depending upon old age people and women ,the agricultural sector can’t bring the desire levels of returns . No sector of the national economy can bring desired levels of returns unless the involvement of youths is ensured in it. Nepal agriculture sector is currently directed towards foreign employment for the bright future. Many youths plan to sell land and cattle to manage money for a job in foreign. It makes national economy down. Most of the youths do not have insurance and becomes the victim of serious health and insecurity.
Many youths who despised agriculture as an occupation at home have ended up taking up difficult menial jobs in a harsh environment in foreign countries. A sense of attachment to ones country has finally dawned upon them, and they have started different ventures in different sector . They should be encourage more and more youths need to be inspired to start investment their energy and entrepreneurship  in agriculture to make the country self reliant and prosperous. Farmers pension and insurance combine with good and market infrastructure can bring an agricultural revolution in the country. The average age of the farmers all over the world has been found increasing specially in the recent years . This is happening because agriculture is not the first choice of many youths. Not only is the percentage of people engaged in farming decreases but their has also been a considerable decrease in budget allocation and investment by the state in agriculture. All  these should be managed properly . And it is sad reality that world is facing food insecurity. Food prices climbing up . With the growing population there is need to produce more food. The present situation demands that there should be someone taking up these responsibilities at all levels from global to local. It should be someone who cares and thinks about agricultural transformation by involving young generation. Local and rural villages must be aware and they should be provided proper facilities to support quality of life. Increasing investment in small farmers for rural development, orientation ,training , insurance, education for the youth in agriculture change the image of farming.
Agriculture is the backbone of Nepali economy, employing over about 65% of the country labour force and providing over one third of the country gross domestic products. Mostly importantly agriculture makes the livelihood of most Nepali citizens as it brings about 80% of the country household earning. Nevertheless many farmers are marginal and small holders ( over 52%) having less than 2 hectares of land which is not always farms land. As a result more than 60% of farming households do not even produce enough grain for their personal households. In recent years, massive intervention have been made through targeting youth ,women and their marginalised groups of people .Different national and international organization are providing different forms of support to these groups. Many youths should be encouraged to involve in agriculture.
"Agriculture is the backbone of National economy and Youths are the backbone of agriculture".
