Black Rice is a type of rice that belongs to the species Oryza sativa L. Varieties of black rice includes Indonesian black rice, Philippine balatinaw rice and Thai jasmine black rice. Researchers tells that black rice was consumed only by royals in china and ordinary people were not allowed to consume this rice. So,it is also known as Emperor's Rice. Black rice has a deep black colour and usually turns into deep purple when cooked. Its dark colour is due to anthocyanin content.

In compare to other rice, black rice is one of the most nutritious rice. It is a good source of protein,fiber,iron,etc. Several research shows that the black rice contains over 23 types of antioxidants (compound that protects cell against oxidative stress) and has highest antioxidant activity. It also helps to protect against heart diseases. However,further more research is needed to understand black rice's effect on heart diseases. It also helps to detoxify the body, promotes brain function and boost a person's immunity power. It is good for hair,skin and eyes and is antidiabetics.

Black rice is very rich in nutrients and is difficult to digest. So it is consumed by mixing with other normal rice. To avoid any possible health hazard,15 gm of black rice should mix with 1 kg of other rice and should soak in water for at least 12 hour before cooking. Food nutritionists consider black rice as a modern super food.

In Nepal, a farmer has produced black rice for the first time in sindhupalchok district in 14 ropanies of land. Nepalese farmer started black rice production about 5 year ago in Dang district. Farmlands of 1500 to 1800 m above sea level are considered suitable for black rice production. To germinate black rice seed in dry seed bed,it is better to use water soak seed. Seed takes approximately 1 to 2 week to sprout.

Black rice consumption is increasing day by day around the world because of its high health benefits. And it is clear that in coming days,the demand of black rice will increases in national and international markets. For Nepalese farmer black rice may be the important agricultural product to earn foreign currency.
